Our beloved Nelson Mandela spent 67 years of his life fighting for justice, equality and human rights for all. In recognition of this, Blue Route Mall will spend 67 minutes of their time in service of others in need, as well as hosting an incredible event to allow other members of their community to give service. Blue Route Mall has teamed up the Butterfly Art Project for this very special event. All proceeds will go to teaching healing art classes to traumatised children in disadvantaged communities.
About The Butterfly Art Project
Butterfly Art Project is a local NPO founded by caring artists, teachers and community art facilitators who want to see South African children thrive. They offer psycho-social support for traumatised children and youth from disadvantaged communities.
What is Art Therapy?
Art Therapy is a very effective form of psychotherapy that encourages self-expression through painting or drawing and is used as a remedial, diagnostic or healing activity. It helps children in treatment to develop self-awareness, explore their emotions, resolve internal conflicts, improve social skills and raise their self-esteem. It has proved to help children to achieve personal well-being and increases their level of function.
The Mandela Day Event at Blue Route Mall
Butterfly Art Project will be creating two colour-by-numbers unity boards with images of Nelson Mandela. The boards will consist of 50 pieces (each) to form a puzzle. A piece of the puzzle can be purchased for R67 and once purchased, the piece can then coloured in at the art station based at entrance 1 of the mall. There will also be pin badges available to decorate and purchase at R67.00 each
The event will take place from 09:00 - 17:00 and guests can meet at the Tekkie Town on the ground floor at entrance 1.
Once these masterpieces have been created, the puzzle pieces will returned to the Butterfly Art Project staff at which point the pieces will be prepared for display.
These finished unity boards will be displayed at the mall for two weeks and will be auctioned off to raise funds for the incredible work that the Butterfly Art Project is doing for the community’s youth. Look for the artwork in the Woolworths court on the first floor at Blue Route Mall.
The Butterfly Art Project (BAP) Silent Auction
From 18 - 31 July, additional Butterfly Art Project artwork will be displayed in the Woolworths and the Mugg & Bean courts. All of this art has been created by children and youth in Blue Route Mall’s local community and facilitated by the artists, mentors and teachers at Butterfly Art Project.
Each artwork will be displayed on an easel, accompanied by an entry box. Customers can write down what amount they would like to pay for the art piece, as well as their contact details.
At the end of the exhibit, Butterfly Art Project will review the bids and the individual artworks will be awarded to the highest bidders.
This is just another way that Blue Route Mall is showcasing their passion for uplifting and assisting their local community in an ongoing initiative they call “Blue Route Mall Changing Lives”.
